Power Dressing Without A Suit: Fashion Tips For Men

Many people think that when it comes to men’s fashion, all you have to do is either have a power suit, or have a set of clothes that look like you’re on your own private yacht, with a glass of wine waiting. But the truth is, you can look dapper and attractive even in your everyday clothes. All you have to do is follow some of the tips we’ll be talking about in this article. And no, “dressing up like you don’t care” is not a good bar for looking good.

Your clothes should fit you well.

It’s a common thing now to wear baggy clothes, or, for some scenes to wear clothes that look like they are too small. A good rule of thumb is to wear clothes that look like they are just about to hug the shape of your body. You should also leave enough “give” to move your body around without stressing the item of clothing too much.

Less is more

It’s okay to have all the colors of the rainbow in your closet, for all the occasions you may need them. But it’s not okay to wear more than three colors at the same time. Neither is it okay to be so full of bling that people think you’re some kind of rap artist or rock star (unless of course, you do perform onstage…). If you want to have a flashy accent, keep it to one or two accessories or items of clothing, like an ornate belt buckle, or a spiffy watch.

Keep your look unified

If you’re wearing a rugged-looking jacket, then dress pants are a no-no. Or, if you’re wearing a decent dark-colored coat, don’t use ratty knee-holed jeans. Your clothes should tell the same story, as the case may be, so mixing, say, hiking clothes with evening dress clothes is a fashion disaster that you shouldn’t find yourself doing. It’s not adventurous, it just looks wrong.

Overdressing is preferable

If you’re not sure about what the preferred level of clothing is for a party or event you’re going to, dress up for it at one notch above what you figure the dress code is. This works better than, say, coming to a party with a smart casual code, and finding out that your T-shirt and jeans didn’t make the cut. It’s a different thing, however, in a business setting. Do be careful of dressing up better than the boss does.

Details are important

Do recognize the power of a good detail piece, be it a spiffy wristwatch, how you tie your necktie, or even the way that your pant legs drape over your shoes. For some, it can be as simple as how long sleeves are folded.

Be cautious with trends and logos

While it’s okay to update your wardrobe to look more modern every now and then, it’s a good idea to keep a central wardrobe core that has a timeless – if conservative – appeal. That way, you won’t be taken in by fashion trends that might fade away in a few months. In the same way, if you will wear an item of clothing with a considerable branding, keep it to that item alone. Avoid the downfall of looking like a mannequin all dolled up for a weekend sale.

Shoes are a part of our wardrobe

Good clothes require matching good shoes. A good pair of shoes can be the outstanding detail of your get-up, or it may be the lock that makes your whole outfit look perfect. Invest in shoes as you would in good clothes, and all the guidelines we’re talking about in this article are true for shoes as well.

Personal hygiene is part of the package

Your haircut, dental hygiene and even your shaved mug are all part of your look. You can’t look dapper if your hair and bear are out of sorts, or if your teeth look like they need to be cleaned by your dentist.

Keep yourself in reasonable shape

It’s not just a matter of health, but also a matter of style. Maybe some of the clothes you really like require you to shed some pounds. If that’s the case, then it’s time to hit the gym or your treadmill. Do take note; your personal style is always affected by your body shape, and vice versa. Keeping yourself in reasonable shape then, will also positively affect what you can or cannot wear to achieve your personal look.

Develop a look, and keep on experimenting

One of the most important things to do is to find your own “look” and then refine it, keeping in mind all the rules we’ve been talking about in this article. However, it’s not a bad idea to try new things as well, since adding an new detail here and there might lead to an evolution in your look, and who knows, it could be for the better, or it could be as simple as updating your look for what’s currently fashionable.

Make sure you have a friend with a good eye

Fashion isn’t just about self-expression; it’s also about the eye of the beholder. It would be a good idea to have a friend you can go out shopping with, so you can get an idea of what looks good on you, as seen by an outsider. This also helps you stay honest, as even if you have a personal preference for something, it simply might not work with how you look, or how you are.
