NLP: Can it Help You Reach Your Health & Fitness Goals?

When it comes to health and fitness, neuro-linguistic programming is a pretty long word. But this highly-respected concept of mind over matter is as effective for weight loss, muscle strength and improved health as it is in other areas of your life. If you’ve tried to reach specific fitness or health goals without success, neuro-linguistic programming could prove to be the missing link. In order to use it effectively to help you achieve milestones, it’s important to have a foundational understanding that you can build on.

An Overview of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

  • The Beginning. In 1975, two researchers wanted to study people who were excellent communicators so they could create a behavior model. Their intent was to use the model to teach other people how to achieve the same positive effects through similar behavior.

  • What NLP Can Do. NLP can help people change their thoughts, behaviors and beliefs. With practice, NLP can help you remove the limitations that have prevented you from previously reaching health and fitness goals. You can also learn how to control your physical and emotional behavior, which leads to greater choices.

  • NLP Benefits Applied to Health and Fitness. Self-limiting thoughts are high on the list of factors that prevent people from achieving health and fitness goals. By learning to alter your mindset and change your beliefs accordingly, you can break through fitness barriers to lose weight, gain more muscle or run a little faster.

Use NLP for Fitness and Health Goal-Achievement

  • Set Clear Goals. NLP works best when you’ve set clear goals for yourself, with the certainty that the goals you’ve created are reasonable for you. For instance, it’s not likely you’ll become an Olympic swimmer in one year if you’ve never taken swimming lessons. Clear, attainable goals make a good starting point.

  • Remove Limitations. The limitations we create for ourselves are often based on false truths, such as “I’m just no good at sports.” Perhaps you’re inexperienced, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn or become better. When this falsehood is reframed to something like “I don’t know a lot about tennis”, a plan can be made to change the situation.

  • Apply NLP Foundations. The example above shows you how NLP can and should be applied to your fitness and health goals. This process can be used no matter what your goals are as long as they’re attainable for you.

  • Use NLP to Enhance Your Health & Fitness Experiences. Similar to any new process you learn, it will take a while to fully integrate NLP into your health and fitness experience. Be diligent and mindful in your use of neuro-linguistics programming techniques until they become habit.

Part of a Well-Rounded Program

Neuro-linguistics programming is similar to training wheels on a bicycle. You might be able to learn how to ride the bike well without it, but you’ll probably fall down many times. Combine NLP with a healthy diet and effective cardio and strength training exercises to reach the health and fitness goals you’ve set for yourself. Before you start on a new health or fitness program, you should always consult your doctor to make sure your plans are appropriate for you.

A well-rounded program that includes the use of NLP will train you to set appropriate goals and work more effectively and efficiently toward them. In effect, NLP helps remove many of the self-sabotaging behaviors that have likely been the culprits of past health and fitness struggles. With NLP, those struggles can be avoided, using a program that feels natural and makes sense.
